Your Health Savings Account (HSA) and Health Care Flexible Spending Account (HCFSA), formerly known as the Health Care Reimbursement Account (HCRA), are tax-advantaged accounts to help you pay for qualified health care expenses. This means that any money deposited into these accounts — by you or American Express — isn’t taxed, helping your money go further.

HSA Details
HSAs are triple-tax-advantaged for federal taxes and most state taxes, which means you never pay taxes on contributions, earnings or withdrawals as long as they are used for eligible health care expenses. Certain states, however, require state taxes to be paid on HSA contributions and/or earnings.
Who’s Eligible
When you enroll in the Basic or Premier Medical Plan, an HSA is automatically opened for you.
How It Is Funded
Company contributions. If you choose the Premier Plan, American Express makes a deposit into your account every year, as shown below.* If you choose the Basic or Select Plan, American Express does not contribute to your HSA.
Band Level | Company Contributions for Single Coverage | Company Contribution for Family Coverage |
20–30 | $500 | $1,000 |
35+ | $400 | $800 |
*Amounts are prorated for midyear new hires and eligibility changes.
HCFSA Details
In addition to the HSA, American Express offers the Health Care Flexible Spending Account (HCFSA). The HCFSA allows you to contribute pre-tax dollars, which reduces your taxable income and increases the spending power of your HCFSA dollars.
Who's Eligible
All U.S.-based full-time American Express colleagues and part-time colleagues scheduled to work 20 or more hours per week are eligible for the HCFSA.
How It Is Funded
Personal contributions. You add to your account through pre-tax payroll deductions. Once you enroll, you cannot change your elections during the year unless you experience a qualifying life event.
Go to U.S. Benefits on The Square, accessible via your Amex computer, or call the Colleague Service Center at 855-783-4772 (Monday–Friday, 9 am–7 pm EST) to process changes.
