HSA and HCFSA

Your Health Savings Account (HSA) and Health Care Flexible Spending Account (HCFSA), formerly known as the Health Care Reimbursement Account (HCRA), are tax-advantaged accounts to help you pay for qualified health care expenses. This means that any money deposited into these accounts — by you or American Express — isn’t taxed, helping your money go further.

Important

If you have both types of tax-advantaged accounts, your HSA can be used to cover qualified health care expenses, like doctor visits, coinsurance, qualified prescription drugs and more. Your HCFSA can only be used to pay for qualified dental and vision expenses until you reach your medical plan’s in-network deductible, per IRS rules.

After you reach the deductible, you can use your HCFSA to pay for all qualified health care and
prescription drug expenses.

If you’re enrolled in the Select Medical Plan or you waived medical coverage with American Express, you can use it for all qualified health care expenses.

HSA Details

HSAs are triple-tax-advantaged for federal taxes and most state taxes, which means you never pay taxes on contributions, earnings or withdrawals as long as they are used for eligible health care expenses. Certain states, however, require state taxes to be paid on HSA contributions and/or earnings.
