Split Purchases - Frequently Asked Questions
This feature allows you to split a Card purchase amount directly from the American Express App with Venmo and PayPal users. Once enrolled, tap an eligible transaction, select Split It, and choose who you want to split the amount with. We’ll divvy up the total, allow you to customize the amounts, and send out the requests from your linked account with Venmo or PayPal. If a request is accepted, the money will be applied to your linked account with Venmo or PayPal. You can track your purchases, outstanding requests, and the money you’ve received all within the Amex App.
This feature is available in the Amex App for Card Members with eligible Cards, and enrollment is required. Eligible Cards are personal American Express® Cards issued by a U.S. banking subsidiary of American Express that are not cancelled. Prepaid Cards and products, American Express® Corporate Cards, American Express® Small Business Cards and American Express-branded cards or account numbers issued by other financial institutions are not eligible.
When you split a purchase, you’re requesting to be paid back by Venmo or PayPal users for an amount that corresponds to a purchase you’ve made on your Card. You’re still responsible for paying the full purchase amount and any interest associated with the purchase, or fees we assess as a result of the purchase. You'll keep all the rewards that you earn for the purchases that you split. If a request is accepted, the money will be applied to your account with Venmo or PayPal.
You can split eligible purchase amounts that are either pending or posted within your current billing cycle or that appear on your most recent Billing Statement. Eligible purchases must be at least $1.00 and do not include cash advances or any fee owed to us, including annual membership fees. You cannot split purchases in a Plan It balance.
Eligible purchases will appear with a Split It icon within the transaction details. You can view the transaction details of any purchase by tapping on the purchase from the Home tab of the Amex App.
You’ll earn rewards for purchases you split in the same way that you would for other purchases you make with your Card. Please see your Card Member Agreement or Membership Rewards® program Terms and Conditions for more details about your Card’s reward program.
