The Beginning
American Express cares deeply about communities and believes small businesses are at the core of every thriving neighborhood.
That's why — in the midst of the recession in 2010 — we created Small Business Saturday® on the Saturday after Thanksgiving to encourage people to Shop Small and bring more holiday shopping to small businesses.
Gaining Momentum Nationwide
The first Small Business Saturday in 2010 was a success. As the Shop Small Movement gained momentum, in 2011 the Senate unanimously passed a resolution in support of the day, with officials from all 50 states participating.

Small Business Saturday continues to be an annual holiday shopping tradition - just one part of the larger Shop Small Movement that helps support small businesses every day and everywhere.
