An example of Expanded Buying Power in action

Like any business relationship where trust builds over time, business owners who have consistently paid at least their minimum due on time may have higher spending capacity over their credit limits. For instance, a business has a $10,000 credit limit on their Blue Business Cash™ Card and would like to upgrade their equipment which will cost $15,000. If the business qualifies, they can use their Card to make the $15,000 purchase for new equipment - while earning $300 cash back2 on the full purchase amount.

**This assumes the Cardmember has spent less than $50,000 in the given year and earns 2% cash back, 1% thereafter.

Check your spending power

To confirm if a purchase above your limit will be approved, use the Check Spending Power tool within your American Express online account or the American Express® App4.

Frequently asked questions

1. Expanded Buying Power

The portion of your account balance that is above your credit limit is due in full each month as part of your minimum payment due. You will not incur interest charges on the portion of your account balance that is above your credit limit as long as you pay the entire minimum payment due by the closing date of the billing period in which it is due. If you do not, then the penalty rate will apply to your entire balance, including any amount above the credit limit.

2. Not all Cards are eligible to get rewards. Terms and limitations vary by Card type.

3. Cash Back

Cash back can be received on eligible purchases made on your Blue Business Cash Card. The cash back is based on a percentage of the eligible purchases you make during each billing period and will be automatically credited to your account as a statement credit. The statement credit will automatically appear by the second billing statement you receive after the billing statement with the eligible purchases. You will not receive a statement credit for eligible purchases made if you do not pay the minimum payment due by the Closing Date of the billing period in which it is due, or if your Card account is cancelled before the credit is issued. For each calendar year (starting January 1st and ending December 31st), you will receive a statement credit of: 2% on your first $50,000 of eligible purchases; then 1% on all other eligible purchases.

Eligible purchases are purchases for goods and services minus returns and other credits. Eligible purchases do NOT include fees or interest charges, purchases of travelers checks, purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, purchases of gift cards; person-to-person payments or purchases of other cash equivalents. Additional terms and restrictions apply.

6. Intra-Cycle AutoPay Terms & Conditions ( Daily, Weekly, Bi-Weekly, Balance Based)

By enrolling in the American Express Intra-Cycle AutoPay Program (the “Program”), I am authorizing American Express to debit the business or commercial bank account I designated (the “Designated Business Account”) in accordance with the frequency and amount set forth during enrollment into this Program feature associated with my American Express Card account. The amount of the debit will depend upon the payment preference I have selected. American Express will acknowledge enrollment into the Program on my billing statement message and acknowledge the frequency of the payment that will be automatically debited from the Designated Business Account via the Program enrollment email. To receive confirmation of the debit transfer taking place, I may log onto my Card account online at americanexpress.com, or call my bank, or call American Express Customer Service at the number on the back of my Card. If I enrolled into the “Balance-Based Plan” (defined below), I authorize American Express to debit the Designated Business Account for the payment amount specified within twenty-four (24) hours of my Card account balance reaching the total balance specified for the Balance-Based Plan.

Terms used but not defined herein are used in accordance with meaning ascribed to them in the applicable card member agreement.

American Express will advise me by a billing statement message of the frequency of the payment that will be automatically debited. Automated Payment Amount:

Total Balance:

American Express Charge Card accounts have a due in full balance that must be paid in full each month. These Cards also offer a flexible payment feature that allows certain charges to be paid over time. If I am enrolled in a flexible payment feature, I may also have a flexible payment balance. If I select the “Total Balance” automatic payment option, American Express will debit my Designated Business Account for the sum of the entire due in full balance AND the entire flexible payment balance, if any. If I enrolled in the “Balance-Based Plan”, American Express will debit the Designated Business account for the “Total Balance” within twenty-four (24) hours when the account reaches the amount specified. The “Total Balance” is the amount of the full balance on your account adjusted for payments, returned payments, applicable credits and transactions since your last statement closing date. No amounts under dispute have been deducted from the “Total Balance”.

Fixed Amount:

If I select the “Fixed Amount” automatic payment option, American Express will debit the Designated Business Account for the Fixed Amount that I selected at the frequency (daily, weekly, or bi-weekly) specified during enrollment. If the “Fixed Amount” chosen is greater than the Total Balance on the American Express Card account, then American Express will debit the Total Balance on the account. If the “Fixed Amount” is less than the sum of the due in full balance plus Minimum Amount Due of the flexible payment balance, if any, I understand that I must make additional payments to pay at least this sum. I understand that each such debit will occur with the frequency and in the amount selected during enrollment. If I enrolled in the “Balance-Based Plan”, American Express will debit the Designated Business account for the “Fixed Amount” within twenty-four (24) hours when the account reaches the amount specified.

Unless I notify American Express to stop or adjust the amount of the debit, in accordance with the procedures set forth below, American Express is authorized to debit the funds from the Designated Business Account in the amount specified in the automatic payment option selected at enrollment. I will ensure that there are sufficient funds in the Designated Business Account to pay the amount of the debit with the frequency chosen during enrollment.

I am responsible for checking my billing statement to ensure I am paying the Minimum Payment Due or the full balance required to keep my account current. If my Card account has no balance on the scheduled debit date, American Express will not withdraw any funds from my bank account. If I have two AutoPay payments scheduled for the same day, the Intra-Cycle payment will be processed first.

For any automatic payment option I have selected, American Express is authorized to reduce the amount of the debit by the amount of any payments or credits applied (excluding purchase credits) to my Card account prior to the scheduled debit date.

I understand that if my Card account is cancelled and there is an outstanding balance on the Card account, you will continue to automatically debit my Designated Business Account unless I terminate participation in the Program in accordance with the procedures set forth below. If I close my Designated Business Account, I agree to notify you beforehand to enable you to stop initiating debit transactions.

Additional Payments:

If I would like to make payment in addition to the automated payment amount, I have selected, I may do so using Pay by Computer, Pay by Phone or another means such as a check.

If I want to stop an automated payment or make an adjustment to the amount of the upcoming automated payment, I can do so online by logging into my Card account at americanexpress.com. My online request must be received by American Express by 3:15 am MST the day the payment is scheduled to be processed.
