At Amex Ventures, our mission is to invest in visionary founders and transformative technologies that align with American Express’ innovation goals. We’re excited to share a significant milestone with our portfolio company Knot. Knot’s platform streamlines the process of consumers managing and updating their card-on-file payment methods for recurring payments, subscriptions, and accounts without requiring any technical integration by merchants.

We recently launched a pilot functionality with Knot that lets select American Express customers seamlessly add their payment information to some of their favorite merchants, including Bloomingdale’s, Hilton and Macy’s, to enjoy a continued smooth checkout experience.

Why We Teamed Up with Knot

The new functionality is the result of a collaborative innovation process between American Express and Knot, which began with an initial Series A investment from Amex Ventures in 2023. Amex Ventures seeks to invest in early-stage startups that can help American Express accelerate its digital transformation and create value for its customers and partners.

Through our investment with Knot, we identified an opportunity to leverage the startup's technology to solve a common pain point for Card Members and merchants and worked closely with the Amex Digital Labs team to partner and launch the functionality. Digital Labs is Amex's innovation hub focused on creating new digital products and functionalities for Card Members and will continue to be a key partner for future developments with our portfolio companies.

Building Commercial Relationships with Portfolio Companies

At Amex Ventures, we provide more than just capital to our portfolio companies. A key differentiator of Amex Ventures is our focus on creating commercial relationships between our portfolio companies and American Express. In fact, nearly two-thirds of our portfolio companies have had a commercial relationship with American Express.

The launch of this functionality is a great example of how we can turn strategic investments into tangible business opportunities for a startup. By working closely with Knot, we helped the startup take their technology to the next level for product market fit, scale and potential. Knot had primarily worked with smaller neobanks and fintechs, this being their first collaboration with a large bank and card issuer.
