How to make a payment
To continue to protect your Account and meet regulatory commitments, payments made to your American Express® Card must come from a bank account in your name.
- Personal Cards: Payments must be made from a personal bank account in the main Cardmember’s name. This includes payments for transactions completed by Supplementary Cardmembers.
- Small Business and Corporate Cards: Payments must be made from a personal bank account in the main Cardmember’s name or from a business account in the same name as the company.
- Joint accounts: Payments can be made from joint accounts so long as the main Cardmember is named on the account and is an authorized signatory.
- Name variance: If the name on your paying bank account differs from the name of your American Express Card Account, we may contact you for more information.
It’s important to let you know that we are unable to allow payments to be made from any unrecognised persons/companies/entities going forward – as these might result in disruption to your Account. All payments are subject to additional checks, and we may contact you if we need further information.

Paying by Direct Debit is a great way to ensure that you pay your monthly payments on time. You’ll always have peace of mind knowing you’ve made a payment. You can set up a Direct Debit via your Online Services, using the Amex App or by completing a Direct Debit mandate form.
To set up Direct Debit you will need your bank account/building society sort code and account number. When enrolling for Direct Debit, you must use a UK personal bank account that is held in your name. If you are not the only person authorised to make payments from the account, we will require a Direct Debit mandate form with a signature from any other authorised parties.
If you are direct debit enrolled, from 1 November 2024 statements onwards, we are changing when Direct Debit payments to American Express will be collected. The date we collect your direct debit is still shown on your statement. You can adjust your statement date, and therefore when your Direct Debit is normally taken each month, by contacting us.
When you set up a Direct Debit, you will have an option to select to automatically pay in one of the following ways:
For Charge Cards:
- Pay the full amount
For Credit Cards:
- Pay the minimum due
- Pay the full amount
- Pay a fixed percentage of the balance
