What can American Express do on my behalf?


Did you contact the business first? Contacting a business' customer service directly is the fastest way of resolving a dispute and getting a refund. Our investigation process may take up to 6-8 weeks.

Depending on the reason for your dispute we will:

  • Ask the business to provide a copy of the receipt so we can give it to you
  • Get evidence of the charge and who made it, such as an itemised bill or signed receipt
  • Get information from the business about their cancellation and return policies
  • Get shipping details or other information from the business
  • Get information about the business' applicable terms, conditions, and policies
  • Get detailed information about the transaction
  • Get information from the business about their recurring billing and cancellation policies
  • If you want to cancel a recurring billing, we can contact the merchant on your behalf and request them to stop billing
  • Notify you if we need more information
  • Review all information and let you know the outcome
