It’s easy doing business with American Express.
When dealing with any of our partners who accept American Express, we believe keeping it simple is the best approach. This section contains basic information regarding your American Express Merchant Account.
Your American Express transactions occur in one of two ways:
- Card transaction, with Card Member present
When accepting a Card payment, check the Card to make sure it hasn’t been altered or tampered with. If your terminal has been enabled to process contactless transactions, Card Members can have the option to tap their Card or device on the Reader at point-of-sale.
- Card transaction, with Card Member not present (eg. online, mobile or recurring)
For transactions where the Card Member is not present, you’ll need to follow a different process that’s dependent on your acceptance function.
For more details, please refer to the American Express® Card Acceptance Terms and Conditions here.

How we pay you. We'll pay the net amount we owe you. We arrive at this amount by deducting the Discount Rate on each transaction, prior to settlement. We may also offset any adjustments to your Account, such as credits, refunds or Chargebacks.
When will you need to pay us? There may be times when your Account is in debit. Reasons for this may include refunds you made to Card Members, outstanding fees, or a Chargeback debited to your Account after a Card Member dispute.
How to settle any money you owe us? If you submit transactions to American Express, we'll deduct what you owe us from the next payment(s) we make to your business. If we consider those payments are not sufficient to clear the outstanding amount, we'll contact you to make other arrangements.
