Does American Express Travel offer gift cards?
American Express Travel Online does not offer gift cards for any type of travel at this time.
Why was my American Express Travel payment declined?
If your payment was declined, it may be due to one of the following reasons:
- You exceeded your Card limit. Confirm the card has enough funds available (either check your account balance or contact American Express) or try another card.
- You entered a typo in the payment details or card expiration date. Verify you entered accurate information.
- You entered an unsupported payment method. Check on the payment page whether your payment method is accepted.
- American Express couldn't authorize your transaction due to a technical glitch. Contact us or try again.
- American Express noticed a charge that doesn't fit your normal spending pattern and blocked the transaction to protect you. Contact us for help.

- American Express Travel Online may take up to 7 days to process your refund.
- Your American Express Travel Online refund receipt email contains details regarding your refund amount, how, and when you'll get your refund.
- Once your refund is processed, your financial institution may take up to 7 days to post the credit to your account, and up to 2 billing cycles to show the credit on your statement.
Flights
- Flight bookings made through American Express Travel are eligible for a full refund if you cancel within 24 hours of booking.
- After 24-hours, some fares are non-refundable. If you cancel such a fare, you may be eligible for a flight credit instead.
Hotels
- Most hotel rooms are fully refundable if you cancel before the hotel's cancellation deadline.
- Some hotel rooms are non-refundable.
- If you cancel a non-refundable hotel booking, or cancel your booking after the hotel's cancellation deadline, you are not eligible for a refund, regardless of payment method used (points or card).
Vacation packages
Flights booked as part of an American Express vacation package are refundable if they are cancelled within 24 hours of booking. Read Change or cancel your vacation booking for more information.
Profile Settings
Is there a way to save flight preferences for booking with American Express Travel?
You can add or change your seating preference, home airport, and special assistance requests in your profile so that this information is saved for all future bookings.
How do I save flight preferences?
- Go to My Profile.
- In Loyalty Programs, select your preferences in the Flight Preferences drop-down menus.
- Choose Save.
What else should I know about saving flight preferences?
- American Express Travel Online automatically sends all special assistance requests to the airline. However, you should contact the airline directly after booking to confirm your arrangements and assess any additional costs.
Where can I change and manage TSA information?
Save your personal Transportation Security Administration (TSA) information to your American Express Travel account and we'll automatically send it to the airline when you book a flight.
How do I add or update TSA information?
- Go to My Profile.
- In the TSA Information field, add your Known Traveler or Redress Number as directed.
- Select Save.
What else should I know before I make any TSA information changes?
- Members of TSA's PreCheck program should contact the airline directly to have their information added to their booking.
- Visit the TSA website to learn more about how to apply for frequent traveler programs.
Travel Documents
Do I have access to US Customs Allowances?
US citizens traveling abroad can review Prohibited and Restricted Items and What You Must Declare on the US Customs and Border Protection website.
If you are not a US citizen, check with your country's customs agency for restrictions on duty-free merchandise.
Are there customs requirements that I should be aware of before traveling?
When traveling to another country, be prepared to show customs agents the following documents:
- Proof of citizenship, such as a valid passport or a government-issued photo ID and birth certificate with raised seal.
- Travel visa, if required by the country you are visiting.
- Customs declaration form, provided by flight attendants or cruise staff.
