When will I receive a car rental booking confirmation?
After booking, you'll receive a confirmation email from American Express Travel Online that contains your Trip ID and trip details.
How do I manage a car rental booking made with American Express Travel?
Go to Manage My Trips to view your booking. If you don't see it, you may have booked directly with the car rental agency.
How do I print a car rental itinerary?
- To print your booking, select the Print icon in your itinerary and follow the instructions. Then select Add to calendar.
What if I have multiple booking itineraries for the same trip?
If you have multiple bookings (flight, hotel, car, etc.) for the same trip, you can merge them into one itinerary within My Trips (up to 5 trips). To link your bookings, follow these steps:
- Select “…” in the upper right-hand corner above the booking.
- Then, select “Link Trips Together”. Choose the trips you’d like to merge, press “Continue”, and then “Link”.
- Next, to save your preferred linked trip name, ensure to first click “Update”, followed by “Continue”.
- The newly linked trips will then be available in My Trips as one itinerary.
Important to know: any self-service features available for each individual trip will still be accessible for the respective bookings.

Change & Cancel
If you find an issue with your car rental booking or have multiple itineraries for the same reservation, you can cancel and rebook your car rental online with no penalty fees.

Will I be reimbursed for unused time if I return a car rental early?
- If you return a car rental early, you will not be refunded for any unused time.
Payment & Receipt
When you arrive to pick up your car rental, you should receive a car of the same class and category as the one you reserved, though the make and model may differ.
Where can I pick up a rental car?
- Pick-up locations vary by destination and car rental company. Check your search results or itinerary to see the pick-up location for each car rental.
- Some airport pick-up locations may allow you to pick up your car in the terminal, while others may require you to take a shuttle to the pick-up location.
- Some car rental companies may charge extra if you pick up or drop off your car outside of the pre-arranged pick-up or drop-off hours.
What documents are required to pick up a car rental?
- Valid driver's license*
- Valid credit card (in the driver's name)
- Proof of insurance (if you plan to rely on your personal auto or credit card policies)
*If you are renting internationally, or if your license does not use the Roman alphabet, you may also be required to present an international driver's license.
What else should I know before picking up a car rental?
- Each driver on the rental agreement must have been a licensed driver for at least 1 year.
- Each driver must meet the minimum age requirement (usually 21), which varies by destination and car rental company.
- Additional charges may apply to add drivers to the rental agreement.

When you book a car rental with us online, we offer you two payment options — pay now or later.
Can I prepay for my car rental?
Reserve your car and pay at the time of booking. You’ll need to use an eligible American Express card to pay. Membership Rewards® points can also be used to cover part or all of the cost.
At pick-up, you’ll need to present your American Express card (in the driver’s name) used for prepayment, so the car agency can easily pull up your reservation.
How does "book now, pay later" work for car rentals?
Reserve your car and pay at pick-up. At the pick-up location, you’ll need to present your American Express card (in the driver’s name) to pay the car rental cost in full.
What debit or credit cards are accepted for car rental bookings?
For car rental bookings, the accepted debit/credit cards will be indicated on your checkout page.
What else should I know about car rental payment options?
- From your itinerary (or from the Payment page when booking), select Car rental rules.
- On the following page, select Forms of payment.
Good to know
- Payment options, accepted debit / credit cards, and when you are charged for your rental vary by country, point of sale, and destination, and will be indicated clearly at time of booking.

- Refer to the price breakdown on the checkout page to verify what is payable at time of booking, what is due at pick-up, and what the price includes.
When you rent a car on American Express Travel Online, the basic price we quote you will include the following:
- Provincial taxes
- Local taxes
- Unlimited mileage (unless otherwise noted)
- Breakdown assistance
- Fuel
- One-way rentals
- Border crossings
- Out-of-hours pick-up and drop-off
- Drivers younger than 25 or older than 70
- Optional insurance, such as damage or loss waivers
What else should I know about car rental price quotes?
- The taxes and fees in your price quote are subject to change.
- Your price will not include additional fees for special equipment (such as infant car seats or GPS), which are paid in the local currency at pick-up.

How can I request special equipment for my car rental?
To request special equipment such as child seats or a navigation system, select Show options on the Cars page, and make your selections. We will pass on your request to the rental car company but can't guarantee availability.

- Many car rental companies will not rent to customers younger than 21.
- You are guaranteed to receive a car of the same class (or higher) as the car you reserved, though not necessarily the exact make and model.
