1. Why use my American Express® Card to pay my bills?
- Rewards
When you pay your bills with your Card, your hard-earned dollars are paying you back-you're earning rewards for each payment. - Convenience
It's also a convenient way to pay because you can eliminate the hassle of writing checks, and there's no risk that payments will be lost in the mail or delayed.
- Control
You can maintain control over your payments because most providers will allow you to choose to pay bills one at a time (you initiate each one-time payment), or set up your bills for automatic payment. You can also track all your payments on your monthly American Express statement or view your current charges online at americanexpress.com at any time. - Security
Rest assured knowing that your payments can be secure with American Express, and you are not liable for unauthorized charges to your Card.Back to the top
2. What is one-time payment?
These are payments that you initiate for each individual transaction. One-time payments give you the opportunity to control when and how much you pay for each bill.
3. What is automatic bill payment?
Most service providers will allow you to set up your bills to be charged to your Card automatically. You only need to contact your provider once to give your Card information and authorize them to charge your Card automatically for each bill. Once it is set up, you don't have to worry about due dates, missed payments, late fees, or service interruptions; your bills will be paid automatically.
4. Are there any costs associated with having my bills paid on my American Express Card?
American Express does not charge a fee for this convenience. Many service providers do not charge for it either, but you should check with your provider directly to determine if there is a fee.
5. Will I earn rewards for bills I pay with my Card?
Yes. As long as you are enrolled in a reward program and are using an eligible Card, you can earn points, miles, or cash back for virtually every dollar billed.
- How do I pay a bill with my Card?
1) Start by searching for your service provider by name or industry. If you already have your provider's contact information, simply contact them directly.
2) Let them know that you would like to have your bill charged to your Card.
You may need your customer account number for that provider, and you should have your Card information (number and expiration date) ready.
- Does the service provider need to store my Card information?
Some providers will allow you to initiate a one-time payment without storing your Card information on file with them. Check with your provider directly to determine their policy.
- Where can I find contact information for my service providers?
Click here to search for providers in our directory.
- What do I do if my service provider is not listed on this site?
If you cannot find your provider, contact them directly (you can use the customer service contact information they provide on their bill or statement) to inquire about paying your bill with your American Express Card. This site is updated frequently, so be sure to check back at a later date to see if your providers have been added.
- How long does it take for payments to be received?
One-time payments can take place immediately, but can also take up to a few days to process, depending on your service provider. You can view your current charges online at americanexpress.com to see when payment has been processed.
If you have set up your bill to be paid automatically, it may take up to three billing cycles for charges to start appearing on your Card. We recommend that you continue to initiate one-time payments for each bill until your provider informs you that automatic payment has taken effect. This may be indicated on your provider's bill as "Paid" in the amount due section of your statement.
- How do I track my bill payments?
There are a few options for tracking your bill payments. For example, you can view your monthly American Express statement online. The online statement comes with several tools you can use to track bill payments. You can sort charges by type, date, and amount, create graphs and charts for a big-picture snapshot of your household expenses, and even download transactions into accounting software, including Quicken® and Microsoft® Money.
You can also visit www.americanexpress.com at any time to view your current charges. If you receive paper statements, you can also view all your payments on the statement.
Note: You'll need to create an account at www.americanexpress.com to view and manage your American Express statement or current transactions online.
- If I set up automatic bill payment, will I still receive a bill from my service provider?
Most providers will continue to send you a statement marked, "Do Not Pay" or "Paid." Some offer the option to view your bill online rather than receiving paper statements in the mail. Other providers might actually require you to stop receiving paper statements when you set up automatic bill payments. Check with your provider directly to determine their policy.
- What if I'm not yet ready to sign up to pay bills with my Card?
You can "Email this Page" to send a link to the page to yourself or a friend for review at a later time. Brief instructions, as well as the provider contact information that appears on the page(s) you have selected, will then be available for you to take action when you're ready.
- What should I do if there is a problem with a bill from one of my service providers?
If you have a question regarding the amount billed by a particular provider, you should call the provider directly. If you have been billed by a provider that you do not recognize, call the Customer Service number on the back of your Card.
- What should I do if I've upgraded, renewed, or replaced my Card?
If you have set up a bill for automatic payment, and you now have a new Card, you will need to contact each service provider and give them your new Card account information in order to avoid service interruption.
- How do I cancel automatic payments?
Contact each service provider directly to cancel your service or to change your method of payment. In some instances, the provider will offer you the option of cancelling and updating information on their website.
- What if I close my Card account?
If you have set up your bills to be paid automatically, you will need to contact your service providers directly to cancel the Card payments.
- What if I cancelled my service but keep getting billed?
Contact your service provider directly to ensure that they no longer charge your Card. You should also call the Customer Service number on the back of your Card to report any unauthorized transactions.
- What if my bill amount changes after setting up automatic bill payments?
Some service providers will charge your Card automatically for the current amount due. You may have other options, so check with your provider directly to determine their policy.
