Frequently Asked Questions:
Joint Rewards Checking Account
To open a joint Rewards Checking account, an eligible Card Member must first apply and be approved for an individual Rewards Checking account. That account owner can then send an invitation to another person to apply for co-ownership on that account by visiting Account Services in their online account. The invitation can be sent any time after the account is opened. Please refer to the following FAQ for information about joint applicant eligibility. If the joint applicant is approved, they will be added to the Rewards Checking account as the second named owner. A joint Rewards Checking account may only have two co-owners.
To apply to be the second named owner on a Rewards Checking account, you must be at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen or a resident alien with a valid Social Security number (SSN) or individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN) and have a residential address in the United States (including in any U.S. Territories or a valid APO/FPO). Applicants must be approved to become an account co-owner. Adding a second owner requires completing the invitation and application process.
You cannot have more than one active Rewards Checking account at this time. To join another account as a co-owner, you must close your existing account and apply to be a co-owner on the other account once you’ve received an invitation.
A joint Rewards Checking account is an account that has two co-owners. Co-ownership means that both owners will own and have full access to the Rewards Checking account and its balance. Each account owner will have their own Debit Card, and will be able to make deposits and withdrawals, dispute any transaction on the account, and close the account. The first named account owner will earn Membership Rewards® points when any account owner uses their Debit Card for purchases. Only the first named account owner may redeem points.
Eligible transactions on both owners’ Debit Cards will earn Membership Rewards points to the first named account owner’s Membership Rewards account, and only the first named account owner can redeem those points. The second named account owner will not be able to access that Membership Rewards point balance. You can review the Membership Rewards® Program Terms and Conditions at membershiprewards.com/terms.
A joint Rewards Checking account includes certain survivorship rights dependent on which owner survives. If the first named account owner survives, the account may remain open as an individual account. If the second named account owner survives, we will close the account and return the funds remaining in the account to the second named account owner. After the joint account is closed, a surviving second named account owner may apply to open a new individually owned Rewards Checking account subject to account eligibility. Please see the “Death or Incompetence" section in the Consumer Deposit Account Agreement and the "Death and Incompetence" section in the Rewards Checking Account Schedule for full details and eligibility requirements.
