Foreign Exchange ECB Comparison

Charges in a Foreign Currency

This page is to help you compare the total American Express Currency Conversion Charge* that we apply to transactions against the latest equivalent Euro Foreign Exchange Reference Rates**, as required by the European Union. We have done this by providing the Percentage Difference*** between our charges and the equivalent euro reference rate in the table below.

If a transaction was carried out today, this information could be used as an indicator of the percentage difference that will apply. This is because we will convert the transaction into local currency on the date it is processed, which may be different to the date of the transaction. This means that the exchange rate used may differ from the rate that is in effect on the date of the transaction.

Important update about non-Euro Charges in the Foreign Exchange ECB Comparison table below *

From 17 November 2023, we're waiving the 2.7% fee for non-Euro transactions (i.e., Currency Conversion Fee) on the International Euro Corporate Green and Gold Card that would be applied to transactions in the following 10 currencies only: Swiss franc, Hungarian forint, Czech koruna, Danish krone, Swedish krona, Romanian leu, Polish złoty, Norwegian krone, Bulgarian lev and Icelandic króna.

This means that from 17 November 2023, if an International Euro Corporate Green or Gold Card Cardmember makes a transaction in one of the above-mentioned currencies, they will no longer be charged the 2.7% fee for non-Euro transactions (i.e., Currency Conversion Fee). As such, please disregard the 'Percentage Difference Commercial & Consumer €' in the table below for the above mentioned non-Euro currencies. We're working to update the table and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
