Protect Yourself by Enhancing Your Card Security
EMV Smart Chip Cards Replacement
To strengthen security controls on ATM services, as mandated by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority ("HKMA"), all magnetic stripe cards with ATM capability will be replaced by chip cards. Enhanced security measures will also be adopted for overseas ATM cash advance services.
With the EMV Smart Chip, your Card is better protected against fraudulent activities. Unlike magnetic stripe only Cards, an EMV Smart Chip Card contains a microprocessor Chip that uses encryption to prevent its contents from being copied. This makes it nearly impossible for fraudsters to decode or tamper with the Card.
We are progressively migrating all Cardmembers to EMV Smart Chip Cards between September 2013 and December 2015. What to expect when your new Card arrives?
- Your old Card will be deactivated following your first transaction on the new Chip Card. Please cut your old Card across the magnetic strip to destroy it.
- Your Card number remains the same as the existing magnetic stripe only Card.
- Your existing autopay services (e.g. telecommunications charges, utilities charges, insurance premium and charity donations, etc.) will continue automatically.
Chip Card FAQs
EMV is a global security standard for Chip Card technology. With the EMV Smart Chip, your Card is better protected against fraudulent activities.
Not at all. Simply present your Chip Card to the merchant sales staff who will insert it into the Chip Card reader instead of swiping it at the point-of-sale terminal. On the other hand, your Chip Card can still be swiped in exactly the same way as you do today.
Security is our number one priority so regardless of whether your Card has a chip or not you will be protected by our Fraud Protection Guarantee. This means provided you take reasonable care with your Account details and do not unreasonably delay in notifying us if you notice a charge you don't recognise, you won't be held liable for any fraudulent charges. For more information on American Express Fraud Prevention click here.
Yes, your Chip Card can be used overseas, even in countries where Chip Cards are not prevalent.
Please activate your new Card before use. Thereafter, please cut your old Card across the magnetic strip to destroy it to prevent any unauthorized usage.
There is no change to your Card number, but your new Chip Card will have a new expiry date and 4-digit security code. Therefore, please update any payment template you have set up.
We are rolling out Chip Cards across our American Express Cards in progressive phases between September 2013 and December 2015. You can continue to use your existing magnetic stripe Card as normal before your Chip Card is available.
We are progressively migrating all of our Cards to Chip Cards. As such, you may not receive all your Chip Cards at the same time.

Protect Yourself
- When shopping online, only use "secure" web pages. A web page is secure if there is a locked padlock in the lower right-hand corner of your browser, or if the address starts with ‘https where the ‘s’ stands for secure.
- If you use wireless internet access, be sure it’s a secure connection and has up-to-date virus protection
- Never keep your authentication factor in your wallet, purse or diary, or record it in a way that others could understand
- Never select an authentication factor or code that’s easily associated with you, such as your date of birth, or a number that can be found on other items that are contained in your wallet or purse
- Do not tell anyone else your authentication factor, password or security information
- Always try to prevent others from watching you enter your authentication factor at a terminal or ATM.
- Beware of any parties that call or email you and request your authentication factor, password or security information. If an American Express representative phones you they will never ask you for this information. We would only ever request your account details and password if you called us.
- You must notify us at once if the Card is lost or stolen or if a renewal Card has not been received or if you suspect that the Card is being used by someone else or any unusual suspicious transaction.
