Shop with Points via SafeKey
SafeKey is a service that prevents Card fraud at point of sale, part of our ongoing efforts to provide a safer online shopping experience.
When you checkout, SafeKey also enables you to use your Membership Rewards® points to pay at hundreds of online stores, travel partners, takeaways and more.

How to redeem
Using points with SafeKey is easy

Proceed to checkout
Go to checkout at an online retailer and make an order with your
American Express® Card. - 2
View your points
When the SafeKey screen appears, click ‘View Points Options’.

Confirm the amount of points you wish to redeem and click ‘Use Points’.
If your online transaction does not go through SafeKey, please log in to your Account and select “Cover it with Points” to redeem your points for your eligible purchase.
Terms and Conditions
- Cardmembers with an Eligible Card (as defined below) who are enrolled in the Membership Rewards® Program are eligible to participate in the Shop with Points via SafeKey (“Shop with Points”) (“Eligible Cardmember’) in accordance with these Terms and Conditions. For the purposes of these Terms and Conditions, (“Eligible Card”) means an American Express® Card issued in Hong Kong by American Express International, Inc. (Hong Kong Branch) and excludes USD Card, Corporate Cards, American Express® Cheung Kong Card, Blue Cash® Credit Card from American Express, American Express® I.T Cashback Card and cards bearing the American Express name, brand or logo issued by partners of American Express and all American Express Cards issued outside of Hong Kong.
- Shop with Points is available at merchants who are enrolled with American Express’ SafeKey® and who have agreed to participate in Shop with Points (“Participating Merchant”). The option for you to redeem your points under Shop with Points will be offered to you during the SafeKey authentication process at a Participating Merchant (“Eligible Transaction”). Only online purchases at Participating Merchants with an Eligible Card will be considered Eligible Transactions for the purposes of Shop with Points.
- You can choose how much in terms of Hong Kong dollar value you wish to redeem under Shop with Points, up to the total dollar amount of the Eligible Transaction, as long as you have enough points in your Membership Rewards account. The redemption rate and/or corresponding number of points required for your redemption will be reflected during the SafeKey authentication process, and by continuing with the transaction, you signify your acceptance of this redemption rate. The points will be deducted from your Membership Rewards account after the completion of your redemption under Shop with Points, and reflected in your Card Account and/or Statement of Account in the manner set out below.
- Participating Merchants may change from time to time without prior notice to you. Eligible Transactions, including the points redemption rate required to redeem for the Eligible Transactions, may be changed at any time without prior notice to you.
- You must redeem a minimum of 3,000 points (equivalent to HK$10) per Eligible Transaction. Subject to these Terms and Conditions, for each successful redemption under Shop with Points, points will be debited from your Membership Rewards account and the amount equivalent to the redeemed points will be credited in the form of a statement credit to the Eligible Card Account to which the Eligible Transaction was originally charged. Please note that points will be debited immediately and the statement credit may take up to 5 working days to be reflected on your Account. You will see the statement credit reflected on your Account as “SafeKey – (name of Participating Merchant at which the redemption was made)”. For avoidance of doubt, the merchant charge and statement credit may not appear at the same time or in the same Statement of Account. If you have multiple cards linked to the American Express Membership Rewards Program, the statement credit will be applied to your Card Account to which the Eligible Transaction was originally charged, and that Card Account must be linked to the Membership Rewards account from which the Membership Rewards points are redeemed.
- You are responsible for payment of the amount due on your Card Account on or before the payment due date. You must not withhold any payment due on your Card Account based upon your expectation of receiving a future statement credit to your Card Account. Statement credit(s) placed on your Card Account as a result of a redemption made under Shop with Points does not constitute a payment towards the balance on your Card or payment of the minimum payment due. You must always make a separate payment of full amount or at least the minimum payment due in accordance with the Cardmember Agreement and billing statement.
- Please note that there may be a time lapse between the time of your purchase transaction and the Shop with Points redemption appearing on your Account. It may take up to 5 working days for a redemption to be completed and for the statement credit to be reflected on your Eligible Card, although this may take longer in certain circumstances. The charge for the purchase and the statement credit for the Shop with Points redemption may not appear at the same time. Depending on when you redeem points under a Shop with Points transaction, the statement credit may be applied to your Eligible Card in a billing period after you redeem points for the Eligible Transaction. In that case, you will need to pay the full amount shown on your statement of account (including the full charge of the Eligible Transaction) on or before the payment due date to avoid incurring a finance charge and/ or other charges on all outstanding balance at the interest rate applicable to the account pursuant to the relevant Cardmember Agreement. You should allow yourself sufficient time to complete the redemption before the statement date of your billing statement in order to ensure that the statement credit and the charge of the Eligible Transaction will appear in the same statement.
- If your Card Account is not in good standing (e.g. overdue or in collection) or if you fail to adhere to the terms and conditions governing the Card Account, the Membership Rewards Program or Shop with Points, we may suspend or revoke your eligibility to participate in Shop with Points, and points accrued in the Membership Rewards Program or credits accrued in Shop with Points may be forfeited.
- A redemption of points under Shop with Points cannot be reversed or unwound, except by American Express. Credits applied to your Eligible Card arising from redemption under Shop with Points cannot be exchanged for other rewards, and are not refundable or exchangeable for cash under any circumstances.
- Membership Rewards Program Terms and Conditions shall continue to apply.
- American Express can suspend or terminate Shop with Points at any time it deems necessary. American Express reserves the right to change these Terms and Conditions at any time without further notice. In case of any disputes, American Express reserves the right of final decision.
- In the event of any inconsistency between the English and Chinese versions of these Terms and Conditions, the English version shall prevail.
