Hotel Eden

Rooms at this Dorchester Collection property are a joy to enter. High ceilings and large windows mean they're flooded with natural light, décor is chic and calm, and every element is high-spec, from the Bang & Olufsen TV to the Bottega Veneta toiletries. Once you've dropped your bags, head straight for the top floor, where the restaurants and bar are wisely positioned to make the most of the hotel's glorious views over the city. Whether you're tucking into innovative Mediterranean cuisine in the Michelin-starred La Terrazza or classic Italian dishes in Il Giardino, you'll be gazing out across the rooftops and playing "spot the famous landmark" as you dine. The bar has the same outlook (making it a popular place for sunset aperitivi), as do some of the rooms, most notably the Bellavista Penthouse Suite, reached via its own private lift. Downstairs, there's a smart gym, spa and blow-dry bar plus La Libreria lounge, where you can browse a selection of art and design books. If you're after something more active, the hotel has a map of jogging routes through the nearby Borghese Gardens and lots of suggested sightseeing itineraries, from a tour or artisan workshops to a day of family fun.

The St. Regis Rome

The St. Regis Rome's building can boast about being the first of the city's grand hotels, founded in 1894 by César Ritz. Just over a century later, it became Europe's first St. Regis and these days it's looking grander than ever. In the magnificent lobby, a huge Murano chandelier hangs from a trompe l'oeil ceiling, and gold accents on mouldings and furniture highlight the regal feel. Original features such as the stucco-adorned staircase and historic lift are juxtaposed with contemporary art installations from the prestigious Galleria Continua. In the bedrooms, the look is elegant and harmonious - even the artworks chime with the colour scheme of soft pastel blues or warm cinnamon tones. Bevelled mirror walls behind the beds bounce light back into the rooms, where sumptuous fabrics and bespoke furniture meet up-to-the-minute technology. Opt for a suite and enjoy the perks that include the St. Regis Butler Service. To explore, the Via Veneto is nearby, and the Trevi Fountain and Spanish steps are within a 20-minute walk.

Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel

Guests at the Rome Cavalieri face tough choices. Which pool should you swim in today? Would you prefer the caviar, gold or platinum facial in the spa? And will you be indulging in a 10-course tasting menu in Heinz Beck’s three-Michelin-starred La Pergola restaurant (assuming you’ve booked well ahead), or keeping things casual with a fondue in Tiepolo Bar? One thing is certain: this is a seriously swish hotel that goes all out to cater for every kind of traveller, from seclusion-seeking celebrities and business-minded guests to couples with pets and families with children. From its lofty position atop Monte Mario, there are fabulous views across the city and the 15-acre grounds offer plenty of scope for exploration (check out the pride of stone lions running across the lawn). The building itself dates from the 1960s, but inside is all grandeur and opulence. Rooms are plush and traditional – think thick carpets, swag curtains and ornate antique furnishings - and the hotel is home to one of the most important private art collections in Europe. Laudably, it also supports a host of sustainability and community initiatives from recycling bars of soap to planting trees, all to help reduce the hotel's carbon footprint.

Hotel de la Ville

As tourist-friendly locations go, the Hotel de la Ville (one of two Rocco Forte Hotels in Rome) takes some beating. Turn right out of the front door and you’re mere steps away from Piazza della Trinità dei Monti, from which the Spanish Steps sweep down to the Piazza di Spagna and the Via Condotti. In short: perfect weekend break territory. Rooms in this 18th-century palazzo come in a range of shapes and sizes, playfully combining Grand Tour influences, antiquarian motifs and geometric patterns to create a totally modern effect. Upgrade to the top-of-the-range Suite de la Ville and you’ll get a private lift to whisk you up to your top-floor retreat, complete with two roof terraces all to yourself. Should you find yourself without a private terrace, just head up to the glamorous rooftop Cielo, which opens over the summer months. One of several in-house bars and restaurants, it has fabulous views, a menu that celebrates fresh, seasonal produce, and cocktails themed around mythological characters. Also worth seeking out is the spa, where orange blossom scents the air and facilities include a gym and a thermal area complete with sauna, steam room, Kneipp foot baths and hydro pool.

J.K Place Roma

The period palazzo that once housed Rome’s school of architecture is home to J.K Place Roma: the impeccably stylish, extremely welcoming and conveniently central hotel. When creating the interiors, architect and designer Michele Bonan took inspiration from the Dolce Vita era and the result is top-to-toe glamour. Mid-century furniture harmonises beautifully with classical sculptures and contemporary art; a serenely monochrome colour palette in one room gives way to bold sweeps of colour in another. There’s no stinting on the finishes and attention is paid to every little detail: there are monogrammed linens on the deluxe, handmade beds and even the lift is a class act, with its own sleek corner sofa adding a little extra flair to the journey between floors. The menu in JKCafé serves Roman specialities and international classics; there’s a library corner stocked with glossy art tomes; and the cosy bar serves up first-rate cocktails.

Hotel de Russie

You expect great things of a Rocco Forte Hotel – and, sure enough, the Hotel de Russie delivers. It’s got a top location, for starters, in an upmarket quarter just off the Piazza del Popolo. The décor ticks all the right boxes, too: behind that traditional peachy-pink façade, the interiors are a chic blend of influences, mixing classical and contemporary and balancing natural shades with warmer tones and brighter pops of colour. It feels effortless and relaxed and it has helped make this one of the hottest hotels in Rome, a firm favourite with visiting celebs, who gravitate towards the top floor suites with private terraces. In-house facilities include a well-equipped gym and a luxurious spa, complete with a saltwater treatment pool, sauna, steam room and Serini hair corner. The undisputed jewel in the de Russie crown, though, is the ‘secret garden’ hidden away at the back of the hotel – an enchanting series of lushly planted terraces, fountains and grottoes. Both Le Jardin de Russie restaurant and the Stravinskij Bar open onto this beautiful space, so you can enjoy a peaceful green oasis as you sample superb Italian cuisine and seriously good cocktails – try the special martini, infused with essences from the garden.

Villa Agrippina Gran Melià

Rome doesn’t get more relaxing than this. Villa Agrippina may be just a short walk from St Peter’s Square but it’s hard to believe when you’re lounging by the pool, gazing around gardens studded with orange trees and stone pines. This happy spot has long been a retreat: Emperor Nero’s mother had a villa here and a convent later stood on the same site. The decommissioned church now houses the Amaro bar, an attractive venue for cocktails, while down in the garden, Gala offers al fresco dining with a seaside vibe. For high-end Italian cuisine, book a table in Follie restaurant, overseen by celebrated chef Alfonso D'Auria, who adds innovative flair to traditional dishes. In the bedrooms, the look is muted shades and clean, modern lines, with blown-up details of Baroque and Renaissance paintings providing dramatic focal points over every bed. Go for a top-of-the range suite, and you also get hot tubs, hammocks and panoramic views, and there’s a lovely private villa with its own gardens and pool. For extra relaxation, the white-on-white Spa Clarins & My Blend has all the treatments and facilities you could hope for, including fitness area, sensorial showers and an outdoor vitality pool.

Via del Gianicolo 3, Rome, 00165

Hotel Vilòn

This boutique hideaway (a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World) may be a relative newcomer to the Rome hotel scene, but it didn’t take long to make an impact. When it opened in 2018, it quickly became the cool new place to stay, and it’s been going strong ever since. The historic building and central location gave it a head start – steps away from the River Tiber, the hotel is housed in a 16th-century former schoolhouse on the grounds of the Palazzo Borghese, and you can easily walk from here to the Via Condotti and Spanish Steps. For design-conscious travellers, it’s the sleek, stylish interiors that really sell it. The grand internal proportions, all high ceilings and elegant arched windows, provide a handsome backdrop for cool mid-century furniture, eye-catching light fixtures and bold pops of contemporary colour. Each of the 17 bedrooms has its own look and colourway but all come with decadent marble bathrooms, plush fabrics and giant botanical prints propped against the walls. On the food front, the Adelaide restaurant offers a seasonally changing menu of Mediterranean dishes, and a fresh take on classic Roman dishes such as cacio e pepe and spaghetti alla carbonara.

Via dell' Arancico 69, Rome, 00186

Portrait Roma

Owned by the Ferragamo family, this uber-elegant Roman retreat sits above the brand’s store on Via Condotti, surrounded by high-end boutiques and close to Piazza di Spagna. With just 14 rooms and suites, the hotel feels like the private townhouse it is and service is highly personalised – your suite will be customised according to your own preferences, which includes filling the minibar with your favourite snacks and drinks. There may not be an in-house restaurant but staff can recommend the best local trattorias, book you the hottest tables in town or order in dishes from some of the city’s best restaurants. There’s also a discreet kitchenette hidden away in every suite. Décor-wise, the look is every bit as sophisticated as you’d expect – uncluttered lines, premium materials and craftsmanship, and a chic colour palette of creams and greys set off with pops of shell pink and acid green. Black and white photographs of film stars and fashion icons line the walls, along with original Ferragamo shoe designs, and on the seventh floor, a rooftop terrace offers an open fire, loungers, lanterns, a dedicated butler at your service who will customize your cocktail and fantastic views – all the ingredients for a romantic evening.
