Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park

At this Edwardian grande dame, you get to experience two very different facets of London life. On one side of the hotel lie the ritzy retail outlets of Knightsbridge; on the other, the leafy landscape of Hyde Park. Book a room facing the park and you’ll wake each morning to positively rural views and the sight of the Household Cavalry clip-clopping past. Behind the majestic façade, the refreshing interiors have been lightened and brightened, bringing a serene contemporary feel to the grand, high-ceilinged spaces. In tribute to the parkside location, natural design motifs abound, from bark- and leaf-patterned carpets to feather- and flower-shaped chandeliers. Facilities are every bit as impressive as you'd expect. The large spa has a pool, fitness centre and extensive treatment menu, including highly sought-after pedicures in the new Bastien Gonzalez studio.

The Rosewood London

Rosewood knew what it was doing when it chose 252 High Holborn for its first London address. The former 9Pearl Assurance building is an Edwardian treasure, rich in heritage features, including a grand Renaissance style staircase winding up towards the central dome above. Before you even enter the building, as you pass through huge cast iron gates into a grand arched carriageway, flanked on either side by the former East and West banking halls (now home to the Holborn Dining Room and Scarfe’s Bar), and across a cobbled courtyard. The extensive collection of artworks includes a British bulldog statue (wearing a Vivienne Westwood collar) in the lobby; the art-themed afternoon tea takes inspiration from seasonal exhibitions; and the British cuisine in the restaurant includes excellent handcrafted pies. Rooms are simply but elegantly furnished in shades of grey, white and taupe, and there are toiletries from British Beauty brand Votary in the white marble bathrooms. Even the spa incorporates local touches with treatments including a British rose facial and a detoxifying body treatment incorporating Epsom salts

The Berkeley

This Knightsbridge five-star is known for serving one of the most elegant afternoon teas in town, Prêt-à-Portea, comes with cakes and biscuits inspired by the latest season’s fashion collections. It’s also home to Cédric Grolet at The Berkeley, where you can sample exquisite creations from one of the world’s finest patissiers, and Marcus, Marcus Wareing’s one-Michelin-starred restaurant, showcasing modern British cuisine. The rest of the hotel doesn’t disappoint either. Rooms and suites are designed by world-leading interior designers and are the epitome of modern luxury, generously sized and equipped with desirable extras such as Nespresso machines and minibars stocked with British goodies. Book one of the suites and you might have the added luxury of an outdoor terrace complete with firepit.

Service is exemplary, there’s a chic little Bamford Wellness Spa, and you can enjoy captivating and contemporary cocktails against the backdrop of the David Collins designed Blue Bar. It has an open-air heated rooftop pool, exclusive to guests, where you can take a dip and then soak up the city views over a light meal and a glass of champagne.

The Londoner

The Londoner set out to impress when it opened in 2021 – and it does just that, from the sleek subterranean spa and pool to the fine views and innovative cocktails of the rooftop izikaya bar. Rooms, designed by Yabu Pushelberg, are full of uxurious features and thoughtful details: there are fine Irish linens on supremely comfortable Vispring mattresses; windows that actually open (hurrah); and up-to-the-minute techy facilities including smart TVs, Bluetooth radios and all-singing, all-dancing Japanese loos.

Dig deeper and you’ll find fun little extras like ready-mixed cocktails in the minibar and a duck-handle umbrella. Take time to explore the hotel’s assorted nooks and crannies, including The Residence, an area restricted to hotel guests, where you can relax over board games and magazines, order in some drinks and enjoy the complimentary antipasti that are served every day.

Then set out to explore further afield: the Leicester Square location puts guests slap bang in the centre of the capital, handily placed for all the cultural and entertainment options of Covent Garden and Soho, and just a 10-15 minute walk away from St James’s Park, Buckingham Palace and the River Thames.

Claridge's

It’s a rare hotel that appeals equally to both establishment figures and a rock’n’roll crowd. Claridge's is a historic Mayfair landmark renowned for its Art Deco décor and behind the revolving door lies a world of cossetting comfort and chart.

Décor blends original Victorian features with Art Deco glamour and contemporary design input from the likes of Pierre-Yves Rochon and Bryan O’Sullivan. Afternoon tea in the glorious surroundings of the Foyer & Reading Room is one of the quintessential London experiences. Claridge’s Spa is an epicentre of wellness, showcasing healing rituals, a knowledge of restorative body work and the latest bio-innovation to amplify emotional, physical and spiritual healing.

If you can bear to leave Claridge’s luxurious cocoon, you’ll find great shopping and green spaces within easy reach: the designer boutiques of South Molton Street and Bond Street are mere yards away and it’s a 10-minute stroll to the wide open spaces of Hyde Park.

NoMad London

If you’re in London for a cultural break, NoMad London makes a brilliant base – the historic property enjoys a prime spot in Covent Garden, right opposite the Royal Opera House, 10 minutes’ walk from the National Gallery, and conveniently close to many West End theatres. That location alone would keep it busy with bookings but add in a characterful building (it’s housed in the former Bow Street Magistrates Court) theatrical design, and several exquisite dining and bar offerings. There are hardwood floors and fully stocked minibars in the retro-style bedrooms, and Argan Oil toiletries in the mosaic marble bathrooms. NoMad London's central courtyard is where carriages once delivered arrestees (including Oscar Wilde and Emmeline Pankhurst) about to stand trial. Now transformed into a glass-roofed atrium, with foliage cascading from colonnaded balconies, it’s a spectacular setting for the main hotel restaurant. Alternatively, you could head to the more casual Side Hustle for Latin American food and complemented by arguably the best margaritas, visit the subterranean cocktail bar, Common Decency, or hole up with drinks and snacks in the residents-only Library, where the shelves are lined with hundreds of browse-worthy books.

The Goring

Stepping into the front hall of The Goring Hotel is a little like entering the film set of a whirlwind period drama. The sounds of the busy London streets melt away, and floral scent and soothing birdsong signal your arrival at a pastoral idyll hidden within the confines of the hotel itself. The Goring has been frequently patronised by royals throughout the years, for events including George VI and Elizabeth II’s coronations.

The botanical oasis doesn’t only showcase glorious views, but it acts as a herb garden, growing ingredients that are used in the hotel’s cocktails and Michelin-star dishes, alongside fresh ingredients provided by suppliers from across the British Isles. If you’re looking for something a little lighter, The Veranda provides a daily award-winning afternoon tea, and prides itself on the tea blends and seasonal menu it offers to its visitors. For a quieter dining experience, the private Garden Room is available to hire, and allows access to the gardens through its stylish glass observatory.

After enjoying your meal under the jewelled glow of Swarovski chandeliers, The Goring Cocktail Bar provides a welcome array of cocktails made by experienced bartenders. The interiors, designed by Russell Sage, are designed to take full advantage of the surrounding herbage and greenery, alongside live entertainment from the resident pianist.  At the end of the evening, relax into the knowledge that your room awaits, a spacious and tranquil place decorated with Gainsborough silk and featuring marbled bathrooms and a balcony.
