There’s a real sense of occasion as you drive in through the stone-columned gates and along the palm-lined driveway, and the elegant rooms live up to high expectations. Mount Nelson delivers pretty much anything a guest could look for. One&Only Cape Town

Walking into some hotels, you could be anywhere in the world but this one could only be Cape Town: entering the lobby, you’re instantly drawn to a superb view of Table Mountain through the huge floor-to-ceiling windows. The resort, on the doorstep of the buzzy Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, is built on and around the water and is lushly planted throughout, creating a vibe that’s more tropical island than urban. You can go stand-up paddle-boarding along the hotel waterways, relax around a lagoon-style pool, and enjoy an indulgent treatment in the beautiful spa, situated on its own little island. Little ones have a space that’s all their own in the 100-square-metre clubhouse and exclusive garden, the only one of its kind among Cape Town resorts. The hotel interiors, redesigned in 2022, pay tribute to local culture, nature and crafts. In the bedrooms, patterned mudcloth adorns the hallway walls, gemstone-inspired shields hang above the curvy bedheads, and carpets and cushions take their design cue from the offshore kelp forests. Locally-produced beaded pots, woven baskets and colourful ceramics are dotted around and the huge bathrooms come with amenities from Charlotte Rhys, a luxurious Cape Town brand. Enjoy the best South African food and wine in the hotel restaurants, which include the continent’s only outpost of Nobu.

The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa

For scenic splendour, The Twelve Apostles is hard to top. Set out of town, on the coast road between Camps Bay and Llandudno, the hotel has the fynbos-clad slopes of the Twelve Apostles mountain range behind, while straight ahead the Atlantic Ocean stretches away to the horizon. A complimentary shuttle service runs regularly between the hotel and the Waterfront (via Camps Bay) but many guests are happy to stay and enjoy the on-site distractions, from an intimate 16-seat cinema to an award-winning spa. There are two pools, assorted sundecks and extensive gardens that lead to hiking trails in Table Mountain National Park. The look throughout is immaculate old-school elegance, walls lined with paintings and antique tables topped with Chinese vases. The individually decorated rooms all feel cosseting, comfortable and cared for. Food-wise, there’s all-day casual dining (including great sushi) in Café Grill, while Azure delivers fine South African cuisine and lays on a lavish breakfast buffet and freshly shucked oysters. Come late afternoon, the place to be is Leopard Bar terrace, where, cocktail in hand, you can watch the magnificent Cape sunset and keep a lookout for passing whales.
