It has become a local landmark, earning critical acclaim for both its interior and amenities. A blend of traditional Art Deco elements and modern style infuses the design with outstanding elegance, combined with the best views over Berlin's bursting metropolis. The Ritz-Carlton, Berlin

Originally opened in 2004 on the reborn Potsdamer Platz, The Ritz-Carlton, Berlin completed a top-to-toe refurbishment in 2019. It’s now transformed into an homage to the 1920s golden age of German cinema and cabaret. Walk into the lobby and you’re greeted by acres of marble, a grand, curving staircase and starburst chandeliers. The same retro-style glamour carries through to entire lobby area and The Curtain Club bar, with its Roaring Twenties-inspired creations. It continues in the sleekly designed bedrooms, which seamlessly blend Art Deco influences with 21st-century technology. On the one hand, you get lavish marble bathrooms and geometric patterns across the soft furnishings; on the other, mood lighting, touch screens to control in-room electronics, and integrated plugs and USB ports built into the sofa and bedside table. In-house gastronomic treats include reinterpreted German classics in the restaurant POTS, high quality teas in the elegant ambiance of The Lounge and fine Japanese cuisine in the hosted partner restaurant ISHI by Henssler. The spectacular pool and wellness area offers a sense of relaxation to enhance the feeling of well-being. If you want to explore further afield, you’ll find excellent shopping, museums, nightlife and key attractions all within easy walking distance. Plus, just across the road, spot fragments of the original Berlin Wall that help tell the fascinating story of this historic part of town.

Hotel de Rome

Set inside a 19th-century former bank headquarters on historic Bebelplatz – also home to the State Opera and St Hedwig’s Cathedral – the five-star Hotel de Rome (a Rocco Forte hotel) opened in 2006 and quickly became a firm favourite. Beyond its stately Neoclassical exterior, the hotel’s interiors are decidedly swanky. Step into the stunning stone entryway with large magenta urns from Atelier Prométhée and Olivia Steele's neon birdcage - and you're immediately filled with a sense of glamour. Bedrooms are spacious and well-appointed, with a refined neutral colour palette, plush robes and slippers and mosaic-tiled bathrooms. For those travelling with family, the hotel will happily provide all kinds of age-appropriate goodies from motion mobiles, rubber ducks and play mats for babies to magazines, movies and games for teenagers. Downstairs, Chiaro restaurant has a lovely open courtyard and an intriguing Italian Style menu. And hidden within the former bank vaults find a stunning spa, complete with pool, gym, sauna, steam room and a range of body and beauty treatments. Come in summer and there’s an added attraction: you can enjoy great views over the Berlin skyline as you sip champagne on the seasonal rooftop terrace

Regent Berlin

Close to the glamorous Gendarmenmarkt, with its two domed cathedrals and handsome Konzerthaus, the Regent is one of the city’s best-known and most refined hotels. The building itself only dates back to the 1990s but you’d never know it once you’re inside. Find grand Old European style at every turn, epitomised by the dramatic, marble-clad lobby with its gold-framed oil paintings, glittering chandeliers and lavish central flower arrangement. The 195 rooms (including 39 suites) are similarly comfortable and classic, with warm colours, Biedermeier furniture and thick, heavy curtains. In-house facilities include a gym, generous spa area and outdoor dining courtyard. Make time to visit the sumptuous wood-panelled bar featuring an enticing collection of whiskies, brandies, fine wines and cocktails. There’s also a choice of ‘Beyond Luxury’ experiences, created especially for guests, such as a private guided tour around Berlin’s colourful art scene or a private cruise along the River Spree. Back at base, you can take afternoon tea in the lobby lounge or book in for dinner at Charlotte & Fritz restaurant. The seasonally changing menu delivers a contemporary take on traditional dishes and incorporates fresh produce from the surrounding region, including local chicken, trout and cheese.

SO/Berlin Das Stue

Compared to many of the city centre’s five-star hotels, SO/Berlin Das Stue feels a little off the beaten track, tucked away in the diplomatic district on the south-western edge of the Tiergarten. It’s ideal if you’re looking for leafy, peaceful surroundings – but don’t go thinking it’s a sleepy backwater. On the contrary, this is one very trendy bolthole and a firm favourite with the fashion, art and design crowd. It’s also a design lover’s dream, as star Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola masterminded the interiors while Viktor & Rolf created the hotel logo and staff uniforms. There are contemporary artworks dotted throughout the hotel and mini libraries of artistic coffee-table books on the staircase landings. Arne Jacobsen Swan chairs in the bedrooms are a design nod to the fact that this building once housed the Danish embassy, and the next-door zoo gets referenced too, in the form of handcrafted leather animal footstools from Omersa & Co. The Spa by Susanne Kaufmann includes a gym, sauna, pool and massage rooms and The Casual restaurant serves up inventive Mediterranean cuisine in a laidback atmosphere. The unexpected bonus of staying here? Guests get to use a private entrance to the zoo at the end of the terrace.

Hilton Berlin

The Hilton Berlin has a conveniently central location in the heart of the Mitte district, on the edge of the historic Gendarmenmarkt, one of Berlin’s most handsome squares. That makes it a great spot for shoppers, with the upscale shops and cafes of Friedrichstrasse just one block to the west, and the huge Rausch chocolate store practically next door. The square itself also plays host to a charming Christmas market every year, bursting with wooden cabins selling traditional handicrafts and seasonal foods. Another feather in the hotel’s cap is its wellness facilities, with a swimming pool and fitness centre. Treat yourself in the spa, an ideal opportunity to spend the USD$100 Experience Credit on qualifying resort activities Gold and Platinum Cardmembers receive when booking two nights or more from The Hotel Collection. Décor-wise, the look is classic-contemporary: rooms are done out in neutral shades and come with well-stocked minibars, smart, white-tiled bathrooms and work desks with ergonomic chairs. Book an Executive Room and you also get access to the snacks and drinks of the Executive Lounge. On the first floor, the Beletage restaurant lays on a generous breakfast spread with good views of the Deutsche Dom, while down in the lobby, Listo serves contemporary dishes, with a focus on fresh produce sourced within a 100km radius.

Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin

A hot contender for Berlin’s best hotel, the Adlon Kempinski has the perfect pedigree for an ultra-luxurious city break. Everything about this historic hotel is five-star-plus, from the location (right by the Brandenburg Gate and just a short stroll from the Reichstag) to the faultlessly charming and efficient service. Facilities include a fitness centre, heated indoor pool and luxurious spa (complete with extremely chic private suites), plus a business centre open round the clock. Romantic possibilities include an intimate dinner in the two-Michelin-starred Lorenz Adlon Esszimmer (finest of the three in-house restaurants). Or for cocktails and people-watching, take in the gorgeous lobby lounge, with its elephant fountain, soft lighting and glass dome ceiling. Bedrooms exude old-school elegance, with plush furniture and polished hardwoods; book one of the top suites, as the many visiting celebrities, royals and politicians do, and you get a grand view of the Gate, along with extra frills such as four-poster beds, whirlpool baths and 24-hour butler service. It’s everything you ask of a grande dame hotel but it’s one that moves with the times, too - recently introduced initiatives include a vegan version of afternoon tea and Adlon Fit rooms, each with its own fitness area and Technogym bike.

Grand Hyatt Berlin

This contemporary Berlin classic sits just off Potsdamer Platz, with the Sony Center, Tiergarten park, The Playce, Mall of Berlin and Philharmonic Concert Hall all on the doorstep - a location that works equally well for both leisure and business travellers. The interiors, too, have a broad appeal and an arty, modern feel. You'll be welcomed by the spacious lobby, dotted with large artworks and sculptures by international artists. Moving upstairs, find upbeat, generously sized rooms with classic fashion and architecture photos on the walls, Balmain toiletries in the marble and cherry wood bathrooms, and hip decor courtesy of New York's Tony Chi and Swiss designer Hannes Wettstein. Book one of the top two suites, Daimler and Maybach, and you get pianos and steam saunas thrown in as well. Generous facilities include a couple of restaurants (try Vox for innovative, Asian-inspired cuisine and authentic sushi ‚or Tizian for international and local classics), a bar with an impressive collection of fine whiskies and a stunning rooftop spa, gym and pool.
