Since starting out as a freight forwarding company in 1850, our business has transformed into a global suite of financial products and services to back the lives of our customers and their spending every single day. Today, we are the largest global payments network and we continue to pride ourselves on being forward-looking and customer focused.
Our Brand History
In 1850, Henry Wells, William G Fargo and John Butterfield merged their companies to form American Express. The core business was express delivery of packages and other goods, with a network of railway express routes stretching from the East Coast to Minnesota in the US. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, we had introduced new financial products and travel services and by the 1950s, we launched the first of our now iconic Charge Card.
