Why has American Express created Express List?
EU regulation requires all banks to implement increased authentication. American Express will send verification codes to you more frequently when you shop online. Express List will keep your online shopping simple and secure: you can add merchants you trust to your Express List to let us verify you without sending you a code. We may still send you a verification code if we need to check it’s you who is making the purchase.
Is Express List secure?
Yes, even without a verification code we will still verify you in the background. Our intelligent security systems are always on the lookout for suspicious activity and if we need to check it is you making the purchase we will send you a code.
What happens if I choose to skip setting up my Express List when I check out?
No merchants will be added to your Express List. You can still manage your Express List the next time you see the SafeKey screen when checking out by clicking 'Manage Express List'.
Can I put any merchant on my Express List?
You will be able to select your preference on a maximum of 100 merchants that you have shopped at in the last year using your American Express Card.
I shop at a merchant frequently, why can’t I see it on my Express List?
Only EU merchants will appear in your Express List.It could also be because an intermediary acts on behalf of the merchant you shop at. You can check this by searching the name that appears on your Express List. If you have any doubts, please call the number on the back of your Card.
Can I change my Express List choices?
Yes, you can manage your Express List when you see the SafeKey box during an online purchase by clicking "Manage Express List".
Can I opt out of Express List?
Yes, you can change your preferences next time you see SafeKey during your online checkout by clicking 'Manage Express List' and then unticking the previously selected merchant. This will mean we may need to verify you by sending you a code more frequently when you shop online at that merchant.
You can also skip Express List if you wish not to manage it at checkout.
I added a merchant to my Express List so why did I still receive a verification code?
We always look out for suspicious activity and if we need to check it is you making the purchase we will send you a verification code.
I didn’t add a merchant to my Express List so why am I still not receiving verification codes when I shop there? There could be a few of reasons for this:
1. If we’re confident it's you who is making the purchase, we won't send you a verification code.
2. SafeKey doesn’t appear on all merchant sites and therefore we cannot send you a verification code. We have stored your preference for all merchants and this will be applied as soon as that merchant gets SafeKey.
3. Your details may need to be updated. To update your details, contact Customer Service
I used a shared device, will everyone on this device be able to see my Express List?
No, your Express List is linked to your American Express Card, not your device. Your Express List preferences will be applied when you use your American Express Card on any device.
If I have had fraud at certain merchants, will those be listed on my Express List?
Your Express List will only include merchants you have had legitimate transactions with.
I've seen a merchant name I don’t recognize on my Express List. Why is this?
This could be because an intermediary acts on behalf of the merchant you visited. You can check this by searching the name that appears on your Express List. If you have any doubts, please contact Customer Service
How do I update my contact details?
You can update your contact details by contacting Customer Service
What is a verification code?
It is a 6-digit code sent via SMS and/or email that you need to enter into the SafeKey screen to verify it’s you. This layer of security lets us know it’s you who is making the purchase, because we are sending the code to your registered contact details.
