American Express® Travel Online ‘Pay with Points’ Frequently Asked Questions
You can use the Pay with Points service if:
- You are the Primary Card Member;
- Your Card Account is in good standing (i.e. not overdue or in collections);
- You hold an Australian issued American Express Card that is enrolled in the eligible Membership Rewards program; and
- You have a minimum of 1,000 Membership Rewards points in your Membership Rewards Account
You are not eligible if:
- You are an Additional or Employee Card Member; or
- You hold a Card that earns Qantas Points or Velocity Points; or
- You hold a David Jones Store Card; or
- You are a Business Card Member with spend locked to one supplier
To use Membership Rewards points at American Express Travel Online, you must first log in. Make sure you do this prior to making a booking. Once signed in, you can book flights, hotels and car hire.
At the checkout page, follow the prompts to pay with your Membership Rewards points. The full transaction amount will be charged to your Card. Following the transaction, you will receive a credit to your Account within 3 business days for any Membership Rewards points used.
Depending on when your Card statement is due, the credit may not appear until your next statement period.
The minimum Membership Rewards points redemption amount is 1,000 and you can redeem up to the total purchase amount provided you have enough points.

When you choose to use your Membership Rewards points at checkout, the full transaction amount will still be charged to your Card Account. Following the transaction, you will receive a credit to your Card Account within 3 business days, equivalent to the value of the Membership Rewards points used. All payments due must still be paid as usual to ensure there is a full, up-to-date transaction record if you wish to dispute a transaction.
Yes. You will earn points on the full transaction amount that is charged to your Card for the booking regardless of whether you use Membership Rewards points at the checkout.
If you are unable to redeem your Membership Rewards points, it may be because you do not hold a Card that is eligible and enrolled in the Membership Rewards program. It may also be that your Card Account is not in good standing (i.e., overdue or in collections) or you have not met the minimum points redemption amount required. For assistance with this, please contact the number on the back of your Card to speak with a Customer Care Professional.
Yes, depending on when your next Card statement is due, the credit may not appear until your next statement period. You are still responsible for payment of the amount due on your Card Account by the due date.
Once Membership Rewards points are redeemed for travel, they may not be converted back to Membership Rewards points and the booking is non-transferrable and non-refundable.
