Helping small businesses with their ongoing recovery during 2020, American Express has built a great deal of flexibility into Membership Rewards redemption options. With travel off the agenda for many, at least for now, and cash flow being top of mind, Business Card Members can redeem points for various financial rewards to help keep cash in their business. For added convenience, they’re able to redeem online, via the Amex App or over the phone.
Redeeming points for cash flow flexibility
American Express offers multiple ways for Business Card Members to use Membership Rewards points in place of cash; either to cover supplier bills before their business gets paid, or to shop for business supplies – providing cash flow support when it’s needed most.
Points for Credit
Card Members can redeem points for a credit to pay down their balance, and boost cash flow. Available credit ranges up to $8,000 in any one transaction and is applied to the Card Account within 3 business days. Once credit has been applied, it can’t be reversed. It also can’t be redeemed for cash via a Credit balance refund.1
Select + Pay with points
This feature allows Card Members to pay for just about anything with points – from office supplies to power bills – by redeeming points to pay for eligible transactions on their Card statement.2 Points are debited immediately, and the credit will take up to 3 business days to appear online, showing as “Reward Credit’’ on the Card statement.2
Shop with Points
Gift Cards
Points can be redeemed for Gift Cards to cover business expenses or reward employees. There’s a wide range of major brands available, including BP, Bunnings, Coles Group & Myer, and Harvey Norman. Denominations range from $10 to $1,000, depending on the brand. The normal retailer conditions apply, and Gift Cards can’t be redeemed or exchanged for cash or credit.3
Card Members can use points or a combination of points and Card payment to shop online at David Jones. They simply select points as the payment option at checkout. When points are combined with a Card payment, points are earned only on the ‘pay’ component of the purchase. This benefit is available to Card Members with an American Express Card issued by American Express Australia Limited who are enrolled in the Membership Rewards program.4
Terms and Conditions
1. Points may be redeemed by the Basic Card Member for a credit on the Primary Card Account (the Card which your Membership Rewards points balance appears online). American Express may decline a Points for Credit request where the Card Account or Cardmember’s other accounts with American Express are not in good standing. The redemption of Points for Credit will be administered solely by American Express within 3 business days and cannot be reversed. Redeeming Points for Credit is not redeemable for cash via Credit balance refund.

For each successful transaction with Select + Pay with points, points will be debited from your Membership Rewards Account and a credit placed on your Card in line with the points chosen to be used for the Eligible Charge. American Express will select and display each eligible charge for Select + Pay with points (“Eligible Charge”) and the points rate required to pay for the Eligible Charge. Each Eligible Charge must: (a) appear within the Online Statement of the Summary of Accounts page; (b) be redeemed within 2 months of the charge appearing on your Card account; (c) not currently or have previously been disputed; and (d) not be a fee. Eligible Charges, including the points rate required to pay for the Eligible Charge, may be changed at any time without notice. Select + Pay with points transactions can only be completed online. Select + Pay with points is available only to Basic Card Members enrolled in the Australian Membership Rewards program and is subject to the full Membership Rewards Terms and Conditions. Authorised agents, authorised account managers, additional Card Members and Authorised Additional Card Members are not eligible. All Linked Card accounts must be in good standing. A minimum of 1,000 Membership Rewards points is required for any Select + Pay with points transaction. Any credit to your Card Account cannot exceed the amount of the relevant Eligible Charges. A credit will appear on your statement identified as “Rewards Credit”. Points will be debited immediately and the credit will take up to 3 business days to appear online. Credits processed after the Card account’s statement closing date will appear in the following statement. You are still responsible for payment of the amount due on your Card Account by the due date. Select + Pay with points is not available for redemption by Corporate Card Accounts and is not redeemable for cash via Credit balance refund.
